DOZEN OR DOZENS? There’s a Difference!

 

DOZEN or DOZENS?  That little “s” can cause quite a bit of confusion.  Let’s clear up the confusion.

Imagine you're at the market and your friend says: ❌ Please buy three dozens of eggs for me.

Would you correct them? You should!

The standard expression is: ✅ Please buy three dozen eggs for me.

Here's why.

📌 WHEN YOU MEAN AN EXACT NUMBER OF TWELVE:

DOZEN stays singular after a number.

So:

❌ three dozens of eggs
✅ three dozen eggs

❌ five dozens of pencils
✅ five dozen pencils

❌ eight dozens of bottles
✅ eight dozen bottles

Why? Because “a dozen” already means TWELVE.

So when you say:

👉 three dozen eggs, you mean: 3 × 12 = 36 eggs. The word “dozen” doesn't need an “S”.

🧠 HERE'S THE PART THAT TRIPS PEOPLE UP…

“DOZENS” is also correct. Yes! The difference is in the meaning.

When “dozens” means a large or unspecified number of people or things, rather than an exact number of groups of twelve, we use the plural form.

For example: ✅ Dozens of customers complained about the delay.

We're not necessarily saying there were exactly 24, 36, or 48 customers. We're simply saying there were MANY customers.

More examples:

✅ Dozens of students applied for the programme.

✅ Dozens of people attended the event.

✅ Dozens of messages flooded my phone after the announcement.

So remember:

🔑 NUMBER + DOZEN

👉 two dozen
👉 four dozen
👉 six dozen
👉 ten dozen

But:

🔑 DOZENS OF + NO SPECIFIC NUMBER

👉 dozens of people
👉 dozens of books
👉 dozens of questions
👉 dozens of customers

🚨 ONE MORE THING!

Don't say:❌ Two dozens of students attended.

Instead, choose according to what you mean:

If you mean exactly 24 students:✅ Two dozen students attended.

If you simply mean a large number of students:✅ Dozens of students attended.
